What Every Woman Should Be Wearing This Summer!

Here at InsideTransit, we are always on the lookout for people wearing subway and transit-related clothing. This morning one of my friends sent me the image below. As you can see, it’s a woman wearing a NYC subway map as a dress!

It appears to be a map from the 70s. Even the straps on the dress have some subway writing on them (I can’t make out what it says).  The top of her dress is actually most of manhattan which is duplicated from the bottom left of the dress.

The dress is available at Nordstrom for $250! Just get some subway maps at a station and paste them together – then it will cost $0 (but don’t go out when it is raining!

An Excellent German Bahn Photoblog

Found via German railfan Till, here’s a link to an excellent photoblog from Germany. The text is in German but you can navigate and view all of the photos. I love the angle of all of the photos – this guy takes time to create awesome photographs.

Here’s the latest photo:

The Sardine Train in Sydney

Today’s photo comes from Sydney, Australia. Here we see a very crowded rush-hour train – interestingly people are holding on to the ceiling of the train car. It’s rare to see that here in the states – maybe less deodorant is used here. I think at least another dozen people could easily fit – that mean on the left is taking a lot of extra space.

Here’s what it looks like from the inside:

Today’s Photo: WTF Signs in Zurich Subway

Today’s transit photo comes to us from Zurich, Switzerland. It is a warning sign of some sort – leave your thoughts on what the icons mean in the comments – I’ve cut the photo into two pieces for ease of viewing.

My thoughts on what the icons mean:

  1. smoking on the subway will lead to the head  becoming a cloud of the person in front of you
  2. don’t ride the subway if you have no money in your pockets or show the inside of your pockets so robbers know you have no money
  3. do not play the guitar but piano is fine
  4. you may carry a large saw on the subway just do not use it to cut up a seat
  5. do not put feet on another seat

Transit Photo of the Day – May 11

Here’s today’s transit photo of the day – the first one. I’ve decided to add this feature to InsideTransit as a way to honor those who take awesome transit photos – something I wish I could do!

This one comes from Lisbon, Portugal.

Miss Subways Through The Years

Between 1941 and 1976 NYC held the “Miss Subways pageant” where a woman would be crowned Miss Subways for a year. My guess is that there was less drama with Miss Subways than there is with Miss USA!

The Infrastructurist has a good recap of the yearly event and they note, “The Miss Subways contest, sponsored by the New York Subways Advertising agency, was designed to draw more attention to ads in subway cars. Pictures of the reigning Miss Subways along with a short description of her interests and aspirations were posted among the ads.”

Meet Miss Subways is on display through May 30, 2009 at Rush Art Galleries in Manhattan. The gallery is located on 23rd street between 10th and 11th avenues. I am going to try to head over there before the gallery is removed.

Air-Conditioned Bus Stands

Now this is something…how many times have you stood at a bus stand in the middle of the summer sweating like crazy in your fancy business suit and then you realize the bus will be late? Check out this photo from Dubai where they have been installing air-conditioned bus stands. I want this everywhere I travel!

I wonder if there are TVs in there or perhaps a snack or beverage machine – that’d be even hotter! Of course here in NYC the transit agency has gone from a huge surplus to a billion-dollar deficit – so I doubt we will see these anytime soon.

A Real NYC Transit Service Change Sign

Here’s a funny sign that shows some upcoming NYC subway changes. This looks just like a real transit service change sign. I can’t say I agree with all of it – especially since I don’t ride the G or L.
