How Come No One Smiles on the Subway?

Comments

One of the things I’ve always noticed since I was a little kid is that people never (ok rarely) smile on the subway. No matter what city I’ve been to, people on the subway are always frowning. In fact, I’ve been with friends who are happy and smiling and the minute they go underground, their mood changes.

Here in NYC, the trains are air-conditioned so why the frowns? Is it because you know you are heading to work for 10 hours? Or is it because you know you are headed home to deal with your bills and your four kids and their homework? Share your reasons for not smiling when you enter the subway in the comments. I just don’t get it!

you just made me laugh so hard Andrew!
  • People keep to themselves, at least in my experience in New York. Meaning, if I saw someone smiling at me, I'd think, okay... what do they want...?

Keep a straight face, eyes down and everyone gets where they're going with no hassle.

People seem to smile more at night when they are going out and they smile when they are with friends and not alone. Plus, check out the subway when school lets out...it's mayhem!
