Ok — I have decided to rate the systems I have been on at least one time. Would love to hear if you agree or disagree. Next posting I will rate the systems based on their pricing structures.
1. NYC – clearly the best system – moves more people than any of the others on this list, offers an express service and has air conditioned cars.
2. London – came in a close 2nd to NYC. Excellent system. Lost out to NYC based on no air conditioning, and that Northern line. Too many signal failures as well. Love the map.
3. Berlin – Berlin's system surprised me. Very, very efficient, probably the most efficient system I have ever travelled on. They lost points for graffiti, and a S bahn ring train that seems to keep changing route numbers.
4. Amsterdam – I enjoy this system of trams a lot. I am not sure why I enjoy the trams but I do. My hotel was above the tram line on a bridge and all day I heard the tram cross the bridge and smiled. The announcements are great too.
5. Munich – This is not really a subway in my opinion – more of a commuter rail system. Very, very efficient, love the clear signs, the new cars, and the airport service.
6. Atlanta – Good quality system. Loses points for lack of expansion, no super-fast airport service and not being able to correctly handle a broken train in service.
7. Washington, DC – Washington would have ranked higher but their absolutely horrible pricing system pushes them down the list. Not sure I understand why so many of the stations are so dimly lit. Great air conditioning on the cars though, clear overwhelming announcements are positives.
8. Paris – good system overall. The rudeness of the Parisians pushes this down my list.
Other mentions: Venice – decided not to rate because it would not be a fair comparison. Path NJ Transit – did not rate because I have not been on these systems in over 8 yrs. Chicago – did not have a chance to ride this system enough to rate.
