Proposal: Widen the Piccadilly line or send the District to Heathrow

Comments

Ok – having just made my third trip to London, I am starting to pick up on things that need improvement in the Underground system. Today I make my first request.

As many know, the Piccadilly line runs the narrow carriages. These carriages are not wide enough to handle the traveler from Heathrow along with the commuters and visitors on a daily basis. I can only imagine what this line will be like as we get closer to the 2012 Olympics.

So my proposal is either to widen the tunnels to accomodate the wider carriages (see Circle or District line) or to run the District line to Heathrow. These wider carriages will accomodate more passengers and will be a more comfortable ride which will lead to greater enjoyment of Central London.

If we run the District to Heathrow (assuming we widen the tunnels/overpasses if needed), I would call the line something new and run the line from Heathrow Terminals to Aldgate East. These trains would bypass stations currently bypassed by Piccadilly line trains as a fast service.

I am sure some of the opposition for this proposal will come from the Heathrow Express community as the smoother the Tube is, the less likely passengers will use the more expensive HEX.

This proposal is now open for comments and feedback. Thank you.
