This afternoon at approximately 13:40, I was on a Queens-bound F train in the first car. As we entered into the Delancey station, screams coming from the platform were heard as were about 1/3 of the way into the station. The train came to a halt at the "6" car marker. After approximately 10 minutes, the motorman came out of his cab, said that a man was struck by the train and had jumped in front of the train.
He opened the rear door of the first car, and I followed with my cam. I’ve embedded my videos and photos below. The motorman went below the gap between the 3rd and 4th cars. All doors on the train remained closed. He could not find the man who jumped. People on the platform were saying that the man just jumped right in front of the train.
Within minutes the NYPD appeared on the scene and kept everyone calm – asked some of the people on the platform for their input on what happened but didn’t take any official reports. Within another few minutes, the fire department arrived. Approximately 20 minutes later, they had the man on a stretcher on the Brooklyn-bound platform. The man was pulled out alive.
The entire incident took about 35 minutes and the train left the station light (with no passengers). A track worker went into the tracks and gathered the man’s bags. Moments later another F arrived, people weren’t happy on that train. I boarded and continued my journey home. I hope the man is ok.
The MTA staff, NYPD and NYFD did a great job in communicating with the passengers and getting to the scene so quickly.
Update: The NY Post has the full press release on what happened today. Here’s a snippet from the release, “Transit officials say a man who fell from a Manhattan subway platform avoided the wheels of a train by landing in a space between the tracks. The man has been taken to Bellevue Hospital; his condition is not yet known.”
