I dont know much about it, but I heard the issue of running at night/weekends has to do with federal regulations. The same line is used for freight trains, and regulations prevent passenger and freight trains being on the same rail at the same time. Seems silly to me, but that is what I heard.

The lite rail to Leander, a bedroom community, is a waste of the city of Austin's money. It was not thought through and is severely limited due to the design. Lite rail should serve the people that pay for it, but Austin residents get no gain from a system that runs only in the morning and evening and serves even a smaller group of people that work down town. I know of people that have ridden to Leander on the lite rail and had to wait an hour to catch a bus back into town. If Cap Metro wants to "serve the community", why don't they run on the weekends when all of the venues in down town are scheduled? They don't run on Saturday or Sunday. Austin would be better served if they improved the bus stops by giving them a place to pull over and load/off load riders. I have ridden the bus for years and see traffic impacted by the buses. I, as an Austin resident, resent the fact that our tax money is being spent on a rail supporting transit to another town and not Austin proper.
