I took the First Great Western fast train from Bath to London. I was very impressed that the conductor made announcements as we neared Paddington Station to let us know where things are in the station. While I already knew this information, it was very helpful and probably saved people minutes and having to ask upon exiting the train.
I headed over to the taxi rank and entered a taxi after about a 5 minute wait. The taxi driver was very nice and we spoke the whole way to the hotel. He actually turned off the meter as we wound up sitting in major traffic. I tried to tip him and he wouldn't take it! Kudos to him!
I checked in at the Sheraton Belgravia only to find out that the hotel is in a really crappy location. It is 5 minutes walk to get to a bus, 20 minutes walk to get to the tube. The room was not ready as they wanted to upgrade me so I waited about 15 minutes before check-in. I dropped off my stuff and headed out to Oxford street to get some cash from my local bank. The Oxford street area was a complete zoo. I am not sure if was due to the flower show but it was the busiest I have ever seen. Plus, unlike NYC where people know to walk on the right, here in London you have to dodge people the whole time
— drive on the left, walk on the right… cmon get it together!
Sunday, I headed to the Acton Town depot as there was supposed to be a special event for 100th anniversary of the bus system. I have been to this depot several times before and always enjoy it. This time, everything was the same as the last time so it wasn't as great as previous trips. Since it was an open weekend, many collectors were selling their goods; I picked up a few items but nothing of great note. There was a poster I wanted but the depot wanted 50 quid which is $100 and I felt like was overpriced. The depot is a place that anyone who is interested in transit should visit. You don't have to be a huge transit buff to enjoy your trip here. Plus it is outside central London so you can explore a new area!
The hotel is located near Sloane Street. I had no idea that this is the Beverly Hills of London. Every possible top name designer is on this street! Every store has bodyguards greeting you as you enter. It is about a 20 minutes walk from Harrod's and Harvey Nichols.
Anyway, I moved to the Sheraton Park Tower hotel for the last 3 nights in Europe. This is a very fancy hotel but the staff was very friendly. One tip, their elevators have no buttons inside – you run everything from a central computer on each floor. The hotel is a cylinder so each room has an awesome view.
I headed over to the tea run by one of the leaders of the trip advisor forum. Sadly due to a business need, I was unable to stay. But it was fun meeting everyone. Then I went to The George pub to meet some other people from Trip Advisor with Adam, another forum leader. It rained but we still sat outside. This was one of the highlights of my trip as I enjoyed hearing all the stories about London and their travels.
Morning of my departure I decided to head to the airport very early. Since I was booked in Virgin Atlantic Upper Class, I am able to access their new lounge. So I decided to spend several hours there. I had an awesome pedicure and foot massage and played some games of pool. They also have some arcade games as well as almost every possible snack food you could imagine! I checked out loads of newspapers and also had a look at their POOL! Can you believe you can take a swim in a real pool before you fly out to your destination?
The crew on the flight was absolutely awesome. Upper class was only about 1/3rd full and so that meant I got extra attention from the british ladies… never mind that! I just love the british female accent. I watched the season finale of 24 and Lost that I downloaded on iTunes. We landed at IAD (Washington) on time and then boarded these 1950's buses to customs and baggage.
Next up…. my days in Washington, DC.
